| DHT and Hair Loss |
| DHT stands for dihydrotestosterone and is one of a
group of androgen hormones (testosterone, androsteinedione, and
dihydrotestosterone) found in large quantities in men and much
smaller quantities in women. |
| Dihydrotestosterone is actually a stronger version
of testosterone produced when the enzyme 5 alpha reductase type 2
located in the hair cell converts testosterone into DHT. Over time
DHT builds up in the follicle (a small pouch like sac) causing some
follicles to wither away and die while rendering others incapable of
producing or sustaining healthy hair growth. This condition is
medically known as androgenetic alopecia and more commonly called
male and female pattern baldness. |
| To prevent and treat hair loss, the level of DHT in the body must be decreased. This can be accomplished in different ways. There are prescription drugs designed to inhibit DHT (such as Propecia.), which block conversion of free testosterone into dihydrotestosterone. Being synthetic substances, prescription drugs for treating hair loss often have serious side effects, such as gynecomastia and even erectile dysfunction. |
